Type of Treatment

Session Frequency

6 treatments every 4 weeks.

30-60 minutes

We call this treatment a zero-down time treatment.

The treatment can take anywhere from 30 minutes or up to 2 hours depending on the surface area of the treatment. This treatment removes the outer layer of the skin, which stimulates collagen production over time, producing better skin tone and texture.

What To Expect

01. Consultation

We use our advanced VISIA® Complexion Skin Analysis System for an in-depth look into your skins needs. We will discuss your skin goals whether it is improving the appearance of the skin by reducing wrinkles, scars, age spots, and other skin irregularities.

It works by removing the outer layer of skin (epidermis) and heating the underlying skin (dermis), which stimulates collagen production and promotes the growth of new, healthier skin cells.

02. Preparation

  • Active sunshine or tanning beds at least 2 weeks before the procedures, or use sun-screen creams with SPF values higher than 25–30.
  • Avoid deep facial peel procedures for four weeks before treatment (for example, strong chemical peels, laser resurfacing, dermabrasion).
  • Medications that cause photosensitivity (such as doxycycline, minocycline) for at least 72 hours prior to treatment.
  • If you have a history of herpes (oral cold sores, genital) or shingles in the treatment area, let your doctor know and start your antiviral medication (valacyclovir, acyclovir) as directed (usually two days before treatment and continue for three days after treatment).

To prepare your skin for laser resurfacing, you may be asked to apply a topical retinoid on your skin for about four weeks before your procedure. Please read all Post Care & After Care provided from Active Energy Laser & Med Spa at the time of your booking. This will help ensure you get the best treatment results.

03. Procedure

During the laser resurfacing procedure, our specialist uses a handheld laser device to precisely target the treatment areas. The laser delivers concentrated beams of light energy to the skin, vaporizing or removing the outer layers of damaged or aged skin cells. This process promotes collagen production and stimulates the growth of new, healthier skin cells, resulting in smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin.

04. After-care

Immediately after the treatment, redness, swelling and/or brown debris at surface of the skin is common and typically lasts 2-24 hours but could last up to 3 – 5 days in some cases. Gentle cleansing and use of non-irritating cosmetics are permitted after treatment.

Until redness subsides, please AVOID:

  • Sun exposure on the treated area and use a sunscreen SPF 45 or greater at all times throughout the course of treatment.
  • Discontinue use of topical prescriptive medications for 48hrs (Retin-A, Tazorac, Dierin, EpiDuo, Ziana).

When you attend the Active Energy Medical Spa for your Skin Resurfacing treatment. We always make sure you are comfortable and explain the process before we begin. Some of our clients will opt for some topical numbing cream. This generally takes about 20-30 mins to numb the skin. This way you are comfortable throughout the process. We also use an medical cooling system that blows chilled air over the treatment areas. This helps reduce any swelling or hot spots on the skin. After the area is treated we apply cooling topicals and sunscreen.

It is normal to feel a slight level of discomfort throughout the treatment. The sensation is similar to snapping an elastic band on your skin. Some clients find the treatment quite comfortable others opt for topical numbing cream. We numb the area 20-30 minutes before the treatment and this is very effective for clients that are more sensitive.

Your skin will feel warm and will appear slightly reddish. This is often described as similar to the sensation of sunburn. We recommend the use of cold packs or cooling gel. This warming sensation usually passes within 24-hours of the treatment. It is important to use sun screen for the next 7 days to prevent any burns. Your skin will be sensitive to UV light.

We call this treatment a zero down time treatment. Your skin will be red and for the first 24 hours, you will not be allowed to apply or rub anything on your skin, including water or sweat (so no hot yoga or any other exercise that will make you perspire). After 24 hours, you may put on makeup and resume your regular skin care routine, but avoid using Retinols or exfoliants for at least 7 days. You MUST apply sunscreen (at least SPF 30 broad spectrum). Avoid rigorous exercise and hot baths or massages on the treatment area for the first 2 days after your session. Make sure to keep your skin clean and protected from the sun. Avoid any sort of tanning.

Skin Resurfacing treatment is suitable for all skin types and tones. If you are showing any visible signs of skin damage, such as deep wrinkles, enlarged pores, dark spots, scars, or any other textural skin concern, then you could benefit from getting the treatment.

Each patient has unique skin concerns that they want to be addressed. As such, a tailored plan will be provided for you following an initial consultation at the Active Energy Medical Spa. On average, clients usually undertake between 3-4 treatments per area, however, noticeable results will be seen after the first or second session. Depending on your skin and treatment goals, you may need 6 or more sessions. Treatment gaps are usually spaced around 4 weeks apart.

It is important to ensure your skin is completely clean when you attend for your treatment. It will need to be free from any creams, lotions, perfume or make-up. In the week prior to your treatment, it is important to avoid tanning, sun exposure and retinols. If the area you are getting treated is covered in hair, then you will need to shave it before you attend.

After you have completed your course of treatments, you will see continued results as the renewal of cells occurs. It is possible that you may require a touch-up treatment depending upon how your skin responds to the initial treatments and your individual skin condition. It it important to insure your investment into your skin continues to pay dividends. This is why a proper skin care regime is extremely important. Using sun screen daily is key to keeping your results.
