Tattoo Removal

The treatment breaks down the ink particles without causing damage to the skin. Powerful Q-Switch lasers deliver ultra-short pulses that are absorbed by the ink, fragmenting ink particles by a photo acoustic effect, while keeping the surrounding tissue intact. The body’s lymphatic system clears the ink fragments, causing the tattoo to fade with minimal risk of scarring or discolouration.

Over time, as your body eliminates the broken-down ink particles, the tattoo will gradually fade, and the treated skin will heal. Multiple laser tattoo removal sessions are typically needed to achieve significant fading or complete removal of the tattoo, with each session spaced several weeks apart. The number of sessions required depends on factors such as the size, color, and complexity of the tattoo, as well as individual skin characteristics and treatment goals.

What To Expect

01. Consultation

The process begins with a consultation with our dermatologist. During this consultation, you’ll discuss your scar(s), medical history, and treatment goals. The provider will assess your scars to determine if laser scar removal is suitable for you. Over time, as the skin heals, you’ll notice improvements in the appearance of your scars, including reduced redness, smoother texture, and improved blending with the surrounding skin. Multiple laser scar removal sessions may be recommended to achieve optimal results, depending on the severity and depth of the scars.

02. Preparation

In order for you to receive the best treatment, we ask nicely that you come to your appointment with healthy, unharmed skin (no cuts, burns, scratches, or cracks). We encourage you to moisturize the area twice a day for about a week leading up to your appointment. It isn’t always necessary to shave before receiving a tattoo removal treatment. Although if you have thick, coarse, and/or dark hair in the area that is being treated, it is a good idea to have it shaved prior to your appointment.

  • Some photosensitizing medications can cause major sensitivity to the skin, and may have to be discontinued for up to 6 months before receiving a laser treatment. Although we encourage you to ask your doctor about this.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds. As well as self-tanners and spray tans, for at least 4 weeks prior to your treatment. We encourage you to apply an SPF to the area, even under clothes and when indoors, for about 3-4 weeks prior to your appointment.
  • Waxing and/or the use of chemical depilatories should be discontinued in the area for about 2 weeks before and after the treatment to avoid skin sensitivity.

03. Procedure

During the laser tattoo removal procedure, the provider uses a specialized laser device that emits short bursts of high-energy laser light. The laser light is absorbed by the tattoo pigment, causing it to break down into smaller particles. These tiny ink particles are then naturally removed by the body's immune system over time.

04. After-care

Aftercare is crucial for the best results and to prevent infection or texture changes. Apply cool compresses for 24 hours to reduce discomfort and swelling. Use Tylenol for pain, but avoid Aspirin to prevent bruising or bleeding. Keep the area clean and dry by gently washing it daily and patting it dry. Apply Aquaphor ointment 2-3 times daily and cover with a sterile dressing for 3-4 days or until healed. Let scabs fall off naturally.

Expect redness, swelling, and possible pinpoint bleeding immediately after treatment. Blisters, crusting, or scabs may develop 8-72 hours later, lasting 1-2 weeks. Don't pick or scratch the area, and avoid shaving until healed. Protect the area from the sun with SPF. Avoid high-pressure water, baths, swimming pools, or soaking until healed to prevent infection. Wait at least two weeks before swimming or sauna. Itching is common; use Aquaphor, Vitamin E ointment, or Hydrocortisone Cream to soothe it. Healing usually completes in about 4 weeks.

Contact us if you notice signs of infection or other complications, or if you have concerns. If it's after hours and you have severe symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

Alma’s advanced laser technology is effective in removing a wide range of tattoo ink colours. However, some colours, such as bright blues and greens, may be more challenging to remove than others. During your initial consultation, our laser technicians can discuss the expected outcomes based on your specific tattoo characteristics.

As for size, small to medium tattoos from 1×1″ to 6×6″, can be treated all together, over numerous sessions, where as large to extra large tattoos from 7×7″ and larger, will need to be treated in separate sections, over numerous sessions.

In order for the process to be done safely and effectively, we will have to break up the larger tattoos into sections, treating each section separately over time. This allows for the lymphatic system to properly flush out the particles in preparation for the remainder of the tattoo.

If we were to tackle an entire tattoo that is as large as 7×7″ all in one session, this can not only effect the removal process, but can also cause serious health problems. That is why it is crucial for us to follow the steps accordingly.

The number of sessions required for complete tattoo removal really varies depending on factors such as the size, colour, ink density, and age of the tattoo, as well as your skin type.

During your initial consultation, our laser technicians will assess your tattoo and provide an estimated treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

This will also depend on your wish of outcome. Whether you want it completely gone, or mostly gone so you can cover it with another tattoo.

Intervals of around 6-8 weeks between sessions are mandatory. This allows the lymphatic system to fully achieve its job, and will allow for proper healing.

Treatment costs vary depending on the size of the tattoo.Discounted package pricing available.

This is dependent on the size of the tattoo and if you require topical numbing cream or not, however most sessions take no longer than 30-45 minutes.

Laser tattoo removal is considered a safe and effective process, when performed by trained professionals. However, there may be some potential side effects that include temporary redness, swelling, blistering, and changes in skin pigmentation. Following the aftercare instructions that are provided, will help minimize these risks.

The feeling of pain is different for everyone. While some clients may experience mild discomfort during the tattoo removal process, some may experience more of what they would consider to be pain, opposed to minor discomfort. This would also depend on the size and condition of the tattoo as well.

Our trained laser technicians take necessary precautions to minimize any pain or discomfort. Whether that be topical numbing cream, and/or a cold air machine blowing on the area being treated.

The feeling of the laser tattoo removal is often compared to a rubber band being snapped against the skin.

Yes, it is more than okay to get a new tattoo where your previous one once was. Many people actually get laser tattoo removal specifically so their tattoo cover up will be easier for the artist.

Although, it is essential to wait until the treated area has fully recovered and that any possible side effects have been subsided before going forward with a new tattoo.

If you have further questions regarding this, your laser technician will help guide you through the appropriate waiting period based on your individual healing process and skin condition.
